ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1782, the first U.S. commercial bank, the Bank of North America, opened in Philadelphia, PA. They didn't have toasters to give to new customers, as this was over 100 years before they were invented.

In 1789, the very first U.S. presidential election took place. Can we move ours up and just get it over with? By this time, voters were sick and tired of the whole thing -- it seemed like the only thing the town criers would talk about were campaign ads.

On this date in 1894, one of the first ever motion pictures was filmed at the Thomas Edison studio in West Orange, NJ, as comedian Fred Ott was filmed sneezing.
  • Critics called it "contagious." They also said, "Bless you."
  • Needless to say, he needed more plot development.
  • The critics were unanimous and said the same thing: "Bless you."
  • Critics called it the "must see picture of the year"... since it was the only picture of the year.
  • When asked for his secret, he replied, "Pepper."
  • The film was sponsored by the American Black Pepper Association.

On this date in 1959, the United States recognized Fidel Castro's new Cuban government. Up until then, the beard threw them.

In 1963, postage stamps went up from 4 cents to 5 cents for a first-class letter. Now a days, that's the size of the latest increase. The change was featured in the movie, "Cent of an Increase."

Nicolas Cage turns 52 today. When you think about it, he's done it all -- gone bankrupt, dated Cher, done two "National Treasure" movies...
  • And still doesn't have an "h" for his first name.
  • He had income tax problems for a while, even after finding all that money in "National Treasure."
  • He's considered one our country's greatest (in debt) actors.

Katie Couric turns 59 today. Perky birthday to you, Perky birthday to you. We're sure the phrase, "perky news" was inspired by her.

Kenny Loggins is 68 today.

  • Now when he says, "Footloose," it's in a conversation with his doctor.
  • His foot is no as loose as it once was.
  • He's getting close to moving into that retirement center down on Pooh Corner.

  •  A study found that moderate consumption of red wine leads to higher test scores. Especially, of course, if your test involves blowing into a tube.
