ON THIS DAY

ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1793, France's King Louis the 16th was separated from his head.
  • But his headaches were finally gone.
  • They had a much more economical retirement plan back then.
  • He quickly became King Louis the 15 and 7/8's.
  • That was back when heads of state didn't necessarily retire with their heads.

In 1908, New York City enacted an ordinance that made smoking in public by women punishable by a fine of up to $25.00 and 10 days in jail.
  • Of course, now that's true of men and women if they do it within 25 feet of a restaurant.
  • Like that was New York City's biggest problem.
  • They would have snuck a cigarette in the voting booth, but they couldn't do that either.
  • Add in a 32-ounce soda and it became a felony.

On this date in 1915, the Kiwanis Club was formed in Detroit, Michigan. It's a service club where you perform services, but never get a tip. Not many people know that Kiwanis is actually Sinawik spelled backwards.

In 1924, Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin died of a stroke. At first, they thought he was just showing support for the cause. "You're so red Vladamir... uh, Vladamir?"

On this date in 1954, the first gas turbine automobile was demonstrated in New York City. With it's more powerful engine, this breakthrough allow New York taxi drivers to burn twice as much fuel while sitting in traffic.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter pardoned all Viet Nam war draft dodgers. It marked the first the time the Dodgers ever won anything in January.

On this date in 1998, former White House intern Monica Lewinsky admitted on tape that she had... well, let's put it this way: she said Hillary may be the first lady, but she wasn't the last.

Emma Lee Bunton turns 40 today. She was Baby Spice of the Spice Girls. Sounds like an after shave for infants. Interesting -- nobody could ever put her in a corner.

Former NBA player Detlef Schrempf, whose name always sounded like a seafood dish to me (or something from a German happy hour menu), turns 53.

Geena Davis turns 59 today. At 6-foot tall, that's almost a decade a foot. Like I always say, "It's better to have loved a short girl and lost than never to have loved a tall."

Billy Ocean turns 66 today.
  • He was quite the big deal back in the 1980s, but now the tide has gone out for Ocean.
  • As far as his career goes, Ocean's tide is out.
  • Weird when the 80s singers start hitting their 60's. Of course, not as weird as the 60s singers hitting their 80s.
  • As for his career, that ship has sailed.

Golfer Jack Nicklaus, "The Golden Bear," turns 76 today... but he's writing down 73. He doesn't play much golf these days... just putts around.

National Hug Day -- If you could only hug just one person just one time for the rest of your life, who would it be and why?

Squirrel Appreciation Day -- 20% of men have had to battle squirrels for ownership of their garage. And remember, it's personal this time.

Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump. Saturday Night Live is already drafting the thank you note.

Astronauts on the International Space Station have grown Zinnia flowers for the first time in space. Understandable, since it's pretty tough to get any delivered there.

I still think if I was a Space Station astronaut, it would be hard not to call Domino's at least and say, "OK, 30-minutes or its free!"

We'll have five planets lined up over the next several weeks. Apparently, the Galaxy Powerball is way up there.

For Desert Radio AZ, I'm Crusty Windbreaker
