SEX OR FAT?

Would you give up sex to lose weight? More than half of all American women would give up sex for three months rather than gain 10 pounds. Twenty-five percent of men said they would do the same thing. That's according to the Nutrisystem Diet Index, which shows that many Americans are struggling -- and even giving up entirely -- when it comes to losing weight. The survey found that 66 percent of U.S. adults said they need to lose weight to feel sexier. How much? The average is 23 pounds.

  • More Americans would prefer to shed 10 to 20 pounds (25 percent) than get promoted at work (20 percent).
  • Almost three out of four Americans (73 percent) are willing to give up their television, cell phones or computers for a flat tummy. But no matter the desire to be thinner, 46 percent of U.S. adults have chosen not to diet because they don't want to give up their favorite foods.
  • 93 percent of dieters find at least one aspect of their dieting plan to be challenging. The two most challenging are the inability to control cravings (71 percent) and portion size (64 percent).
  • Only 35 percent of Americans fall into the "healthy lifestyle" category; that is, they prepare healthy food, eat proper portions and exercise regularly.
  • 30 percent of Americans fall into the "unhealthy lifestyle" category. They have dieted an average of 20 times in their life, using five different diet plans.
  • 35 percent of Americans have dieted an average of six times in their life, using two different diet plans.
  • Nearly one-third of Americans (29 percent) have tried dieting over the past 11 months, and more than half of Americans (51 percent) have dieted within the past two years.
  • Nearly a third of Americans confess to being self-conscious about their bodies.
