With the news that GIRLS is finishing after season six, we're in need of a new, female comedy voice to fill the void - and we think we've found it with Phoebe Waller Bridge's Crashing, which starts on Channel 4 Monday night (10pm). And with four-letter filth, Millennial angst and tampon jokes, it's ticking all our boxes. Following a group of twenty- and thirty-somethings living in a disused, dead-pigeon harboring hospital in London as 'property guardians' (aka people who stay in empty buildings and provide security in return for cheap rent) - it's the first sitcom from comedian and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who's been dubbed 'the British Amy Schumer'. Amongst the asbestos and abandoned medical equipment we have: Sam (Jonathan Bailey) the sexually frustrated estate agent; Melody (Julie Dray) an impossibly sultry, and very French artist; shy boy Fred, and the not-so-happily engaged couple Anthony and Kate (Damien Molony and Louise Ford) who are saving up for their wedding. It feels a bit like a grown up Fresh Meat - if all the housemates graduated, moved to London and realized they couldn't afford to live in the capital. Waller-Bridge (who also stars in the show as new arrival Lulu) won rave reviews and an Olivier nomination in 2013 for her sell-out, one-woman show, Fleabag. On screen her writing is just as funny as it is on stage; she has a knack for capturing the quiet desperation and confusion of her not-quite adult characters, as they try to navigate their careers and relationships, and generally end up fucking it all up. Awkward situations and hilariously cringe worthy conversations are Waller-Bridge's forte: in Sunday night's first episode - set against the backdrop of a party come treasure hunt - you can't help but recognize the drunken half-truths and extended dance of 'not really saying how you feel' that Lulu has with her old friend Anthony. With Crashing, Waller-Bridge joins the likes of Sharon Horgan, and Drifters' Jessica Knappett in creating a comedy that feels new and real, that can be filthy and moving and sharp and insightful all in a thirty minute slot - and definitely isn't 'just for women'. The really good news? Episode two, next week, is even funnier. Get involved. Watch Crashing on Channel 4, Monday nights at 10pm (British Glamour)
