Did You Really Think a Porn App Was Going to Be a Good Thing?

Did You Really Think a Porn App Was Going to Be a Good Thing? If you've downloaded and used an app called Adult Player, too bad for you. It turns out the Android porn app takes a photo of you with the phone's front-facing camera, then shuts down the device and demands a $500 payment to fix the phone and delete the photo. It's the latest scam in a new genre called "ransomeware." But even people who paid the Adult Player ransom (via PayPal) have said their phones still don't work. Security experts say ransomware is on the rise, and Intel Security warns that the trend has spiked 127% since 2014. One group tracked by investigators made more than $75,000 in 10 weeks. Apps like this rely on the embarrassment factor. If you don't pay, your reputation is on the line. One porn app even claimed that the FBI had locked the phone because it held "forbidden pornographic sites." (Sky News)
