Drainage work requires detour on SR 86 east of Sells early next week

Work to install a drainage pipe beneath State Route 86 east of Sells will require a 34-hour detour early next week.

A temporary one-lane detour route will take traffic in both directions off of SR 86 (Ajo Way) at approximately milepost 128 starting at 5 a.m. Tuesday (June 21). Workers will use flags to direct traffic in both directions through the detour until the drainage pipe has been installed at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday (June 22).

Brief delays can be expected during this restriction. Both lanes of SR 86 will reopen when the pipe installation is complete.

The work is part of a project to improve a five-mile segment of SR 86 on the Tohono O’odham Nation (mileposts 124-129), by constructing two 12-foot travel lanes with eight-foot paved shoulders.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
