ON THIS DAY
It was on this date in 1567 that Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in Scotland's Lochleven Castle. I believe it was covered live by Monty Python.
In 1673 that Governor's Island, just off Manhattan, was purchased from Native Americans for two axes, some beads and a handful of nails. Needless to say, the two axes were the most convincing part of that deal. By the way, the deal was handled by Century 17 Realtors.
On this date in 1858, Abraham Lincoln made the speech in which he said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand" which was true, all the up until the TV series, "House." Never thought about it, but Hugh Laurie does have that Abraham Lincoln look. It could have been a discussion with his wife, Mary, about how much closet space he was getting.
It was on this date in 1883 that baseball's first Ladies Day took place when the New York Gothams offered free admission for women to a game against Cleveland.
Back then, it was chivalrous. Today, it's sexist.
That idea was a much bigger success than their first promotion, the 7th inning "Wet Corset" contest.
Needless to say, it made it pretty tough to slide in those skirts.
We think Kool & the Gang did a song about that.
On this date in 1894, baseball's first recorded "squeeze play" is pulled off by a pair of Yale players in a game against Princeton. They weren't expecting, especially since they were playing football at the time.
On this date in 1933, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was formed. Member F.D.I.C. Yeah, that one. Before then, all bank commercials just ended with the word "member."
In 1960, the Alfred Hitchcock classic, "Psycho" made it's debut. So much for relaxing in the shower.
