Roadway improvements on BIA Route 6 in San Carlos to begin June 30

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin work to improve a section of BIA Route 6 on the San Carlos Apache Reservation on Thursday (June 30).

The work will entail putting down a slurry seal to protect and preserve the roadway and will bring travel delays on weekdays for approximately two weeks.

Work will be done from 5:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays and will require four-mile lane closures starting at the junction with US 70 and extending east to milepost 10.8. One lane will remain open to traffic during the work and a pilot vehicle will guide motorists in both direction though the restricted area for most of the operation.

Thirty-minute delays can be expected.

Work will begin Thursday (June 30) with a test strip and the slurry seal operation will begin the following day and continue through Wednesday (July 13). There will be no work on Monday (July 4) in observation of the Independence Day holiday.

The work is part of a $1 million project to improve the section of BIA Route 6 in San Carlos. Approximately 30 days after the slurry seal work is complete, ADOT crews will install a centerline rumble strip and permanent striping on the roadway.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
