On The Road With ADOT

ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1667, King Charles II of England tasted his first cranberries... sauced, of course. The king rarely tasted new food sober.

Sara J.B. Hale was born on this date in 1788. She wrote the poem, "Mary had a little lamb." Remember? "When Mary had a little lamb the doctor was surprised but when Old McDonald had a farm, the doctor nearly died!"

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb way, way back in 1879 -- So how many men does it take to screw in a light bulb? One. He just holds it up there and waits for the world to revolve around him.
Great. Now he could work nights, too.
Immediately, the next day, there were at least 20 "How many lightbulb" jokes. They didn't waste time!
The good news was, when you turned it off, you could stop working.
The next big step -- getting electricity!
He actually invented it during the day but didn't know it worked until that night. Duh.

On this date in 1913, Camel cigarettes were introduced for the very first time.
They had a tough time lighting them, but once lit, the camels seemed to really enjoy them.
In the beginning, camels had a hard time lighting them with their bulky hooves.
The tough part was keeping the camel's from slobbering all over them, so they could keep them lit!
They were only sold at stores a mile away from smokers, so they'd have to walk and... well, the rest is history.
Up until that time, people would walk a mile, but not know what for.

In 1918, Margaret Owen set the world for typing with 170 wpm on a manual typewriter. These days, my kids can text that with one thumb!

On this date in 1939 that women's nylon hosiery went on sale for the first time. There was a big run on them, but it was stopped with nail polish.

It was on this date in 1986 that the plate-spinning record atop rods is set at 84 at one time. The guy would have gone for 85, but the clerk at Macy's called security.
