On The Road With ADOT

ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1836, the match is patented.
For around 17 seconds, it was the hottest thing around.
Reviewers called it "hot" and "striking."
It sure beat rubbing two sticks together to have a cigarette. (It was the original hot head.)
A lot of people waited for the book to come out.
It's hard protecting an idea like that, because if you come up with anything close to it, it's still a match.

In 1901, Anna Edson Taylor, became the first person to go over Niagra Falls and live to tell about it. Her first words: "That's the last bachelorette party I ever go to!"

On this date in 1939, nylon stockings were sold for the very first time in Wilmington, Delaware. Unfortunately, to a guy named Bob. The man insisted they were for his wife. Of course, there was an immediate run on them.

In 1940, the 40-hour work week went into effect. Our work week must have gone into effect in 1980.
