Bell Road/Grand Avenue Interchange Project Update
Paving new westbound Grand Avenue lanes continues next week

SURPRISE – Crews are set to make progress in the next week on key components of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s $41.9 million Bell Road/Grand Avenue Interchange project in Surprise.

Scheduled construction includes completing the installation of concrete girders for the Bell Road overpass that will travel over Grand Avenue and the nearby BNSF Railway tracks.

Crews also will continue paving a new wider section of westbound Grand Avenue near Bell Road. That work is setting the stage for the temporary switch of two-way Grand Avenue traffic to the new westbound lanes at the end of July.

Preparations for the traffic switch will include the installation of temporary traffic signals at the Grand Avenue intersections with Bell Grande and Towne Center drives.

The project team anticipates completing the placement of girders on the westernmost span of the Bell Road Bridge over Grand Avenue by the weekend of July 23-24. From there the focus will switch to the construction of the bridge deck above the girders.

Bell Road is scheduled to reopen to traffic by November, while the entire interchange project is set for completion by spring 2017.

Drivers traveling on Bell Road west of Dysart Road are now able to use the recently opened 134th Avenue connection providing improved access to businesses north of Bell Road.

Bell Road is closed in an area between Dysart and Litchfield roads in order to reduce the project’s length and lessen the overall impacts of construction. ADOT and the city of Surprise remind local shoppers that businesses near the project are open and can be accessed by traveling beyond the “Road Closed – Local Traffic Only” signs.

The primary detour routes while Bell Road is closed are Dysart, Greenway and Litchfield roads. Drivers should observe signs and speed limits. Law enforcement officers are patrolling the area.
