Overnight closures of US 60 set for next week in Gila County
Full six-hour closures will allow ADOT to clean Queen Creek Tunnel for new lighting
The Queen Creek Tunnel on US 60 east of Superior will be closed nightly for six hours Monday, Oct. 10 through Thursday, Oct. 13 so the Arizona Department of Transportation can clean the tunnel walls and ceilings after the installation of new LED lighting.
The work will require full closures of US 60 in the area from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. each night. The highway will be closed to eastbound traffic in Superior at milepost 226 and westbound traffic will be stopped in Oak Flat at milepost 231.
The highway closures in Oak Flat and Superior will allow commercial trucks to turn around and will avoid stopping traffic on a steep grade closer to the tunnel.
Alternate routes during these closures will be on State Route 77 and State Route 177.
Message boards will notify motorists of the scheduled closures.
Traffic shifts approaching the tunnel will be in effect on US 60 prior to the scheduled closures.
Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but it’s possible that unscheduled closures or restrictions might occur because of weather or other factors. For the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 511, except while driving.
