Pavement improvement work continues tonight on Interstate 10 near Buckeye

Plan for restrictions and overnight ramp closures beginning tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 12) and continuing through the weekend

Work to improve a stretch of westbound Interstate 10 near Buckeye continues this week.  The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan for the following restrictions:

Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane between Watson Road and State Route 85 from 9 p.m. tonight (Oct. 12) to5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. All westbound on- and off-ramps will remain open.

The eastbound I-10 on- and off-ramps at Watson Road will be closed from 9 p.m. tonight  (Oct. 12)  to 12:01 a.m.Thursday, Oct. 13. Signage will be in place to guide drivers through these detour routes:

  • On-ramp detour:  Use eastbound Yuma Road to northbound Verrado Way to access eastbound I-10.
  • Off-ramp detour:  Exit at Verrado Way southbound to westbound Yuma Road to Watson Road.

Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane between Verrado Way and Miller Road from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17. NOTE: The left-hand lane reduction will occur in two-mile increments beginning with I-10 from Verrado Way to Watson Road overnight Friday through 10 p.m. Saturday, followed by I-10 between Watson and Miller roads from 10 p.m. Saturday to Monday morning. Please proceed through the work zone with caution and obey posted speed limits.

Drivers should be prepared to use a zipper merge from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The technique requires drivers to merge later rather than earlier and cooperate by taking turns merging when they see the “merge here” signage.

The project is scheduled for completion later this month, weather permitting, and drivers will enjoy a new layer of smooth, durable rubberized asphalt.  ADOT completed a similar project on eastbound I-10 in this area last year.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction personnel and equipment. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions; however it is possible for unscheduled closures or restrictions to occur because of weather or other factors. To stay up-to-date on highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 511, except while driving.
