On this date in 1284, the Pied Piper appeared in the town of Hamlin, Germany. He had quite a following, but mostly rodents.

In 1498, the toothbrush is invented in China. The bristles were actually the stiff, coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog's neck and attached to handles made of bone or bamboo. The first American to patent a toothbrush was H.N. Wadsworth and many American Companies began to mass-produce toothbrushes after 1885. The toothbrush as we know it today was not invented until 1938.

On this date in 1797, the cast-iron plow was patented. Ironically, while filling out the paperwork, he plowed right through it.
  • Holy crop! Yep, this is one of those days that historians would describe as "a day off." 
  • The guy who invented it became very popular and quite over he would get invited over to get plowed. 
  • Naturally, to celebrate, the inventor went out and got plowed. 
  • Although, truth be told, he never had any problem getting plowed before that. 

In 1819, the bicycle is patented. Did you know: it is against the law to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool in Baldwin Park, California.

On this date in 1870, the very first section of Atlantic City's Boardwalk. The writers of the song, "Under the... something" could finally finish it.

In 1919, the first issue of the New York Daily News was published and delivered to porches, bushes and rooftops everywhere.

On this date in 1934, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the "Credit Union Act" into law, which of course, allowed union soldiers to get credit cards. Didn't it?

In 1963, President Kennedy visited West Berlin and made his famous speech in which he said, "Ich bin ein Berlinner," calling himself a "jelly donut." He thought he was saying "I'm a Berliner" in German. It Germany's biggest pastry news since the Kaiser.

On this date in 1976, Canada's CN tower officially opened. It was the inspiration for the song, "I'll be CN you in old familiar places."

Gretchen Wilson is here for the party. Hers. She's 45. She dropped out of school in the 9th grade and did it the hard way.

Sean Hayes turns 48 today. He's Jack on "Will and Grace"... As a special birthday treat, we won't bring up the "Three Stooges" movie he starred in.

Chris Isaak turns 62. He can now play the Wicked Game of Social Security.
