Daily travel restrictions on State Route 86 east of Sells start on Tuesday

Motorists traveling on State Route 86 east of Sells will encounter travel restrictions starting tomorrow while the Arizona Department of Transportation continues work to improve a five-mile segment of the highway on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

The two-lane highway will be restricted to one lane for use in both directions Mondays through Thursdays for approximately one month. The restrictions – between mileposts 124-129 – start on Tuesday (April 26) from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will continue each work day through late May to allow crews to place asphalt materials on the shoulder of the highway.

Lane closures of approximately two miles will be in effect during the work and flaggers and a pilot vehicle will direct traffic through the restricted area. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected.

The work is part of a project to improve a five-mile segment of SR 86 on the Tohono O’odham Nation (mileposts 124-129), by constructing two 12-foot travel lanes with eight-foot paved shoulders.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center atwww.az511.gov or call 511.
