Travel restrictions scheduled on Ajo Way in Sells as ADOT prepares to activate pedestrian crossing signal
Motorists traveling on State Route 86 in Sells will encounter restrictions this week and early next week while the Arizona Department of Transportation works to complete a pedestrian safety project near Indian Oasis Intermediate School.
The two-lane highway will be reduced to a single lane at milepost 115 in Sells, where crews will be installing pavement markings for the new pedestrian hybrid beacon at that location. The lane closure will be in effect from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday (April 7) and from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday (April 8).
Flaggers will direct traffic in both directions through the work area and delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected.
Lane restrictions and flagging operations will continue on Monday (April 11) while crews install signs and prepare to activate the signal.
No restrictions will be in effect over the weekend.
The pedestrian hybrid beacon, a set of traffic signals activated by pedestrians to allow safe crossing of the highway, will be activated overnight Monday (April 11) or early Tuesday (April 12).
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
