Southbound SR 189 in Nogales reduced to two lanes approach Mariposa Port

Work on the pedestrian under-crossing on State Route 189 in Nogales has required the Arizona Department of Transportation to close one southbound travel lane approaching the Mariposa Port of Entry.

The left lane of southbound SR 189 is closed from Freeport Drive to the Port of Entry to accommodate northbound traffic during construction of the pedestrian underpass. The lane will be used for northbound travel for approximately two months.

Motorists traveling into Mexico can expect brief delays during this restriction.

Additionally, northbound SR 189 is reduced to one lane between State Port Drive and Port Access Drive for construction of the northern half of the under-crossing, and access to Port Drive from SR 189 will be provided via the intersection of State Port Drive.

The under-crossing will consist of a 356-foot-long, 10-by-10 foot concrete box culvert east of SR 189 that will include ventilation structures and lighting. Other improvements include new sidewalks, traffic signals and storm drain improvements.

The $3.3 million improvement project is expected to be completed this winter.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned roadway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
