Best of all, dogs can even fit into this lifestyle, thanks to cities that not only have dog parks, but also accessible places to walk dogs and affordable veterinary care. Nerdwallet.com analyzed data from 50 U.S. cities to determine which ones are the best for pooches.
Top 10 U.S. cities for dogs:

1. Portland, Oregon
In addition to 32 off-leash dog parks, which is the most of any city other than New York, Portland has puppy romps and holiday parties for dogs.

2. San Francisco, California
Dogs can play in 27 dog parks, many of which have breed-specific events, such as Pug Sunday at Alta Plaza Park in Pacific Heights.

3. Las Vegas, Nevada
Not only does Las Vegas boast affordable pet care, but also more than four dog parks per 100,000 residents. Some have special features, such as the Desert Breeze Dog Park that has gated sections for different sized dogs.

4. Miami, Florida
In addition to 13 dog-friendly parks, Miami is a very walkable city, so you can easily walk your dog while running your errands.

5. Washington, DC
Not only does the nation's capital offer affordable veterinary care and plenty of dog parks, but also clean streams for dogs to go swimming, such as Shirlington Park or Glencarlyn Park.

6. Seattle, Washington
Although veterinary care is a little more expensive here than in other cities, there are 11 off-leash dog parks, including the 50-acre Warren G. Magnuson Park with an off-leash area for dogs on the shores of Lake Washington.

7. St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis is known as a pet-friendly city. In addition to plenty of dog parks, it has quite a few restaurants and attractions that allow you to bring your dog along, including the St. Louis Walk of Fame, Six Flags and Laumeier Sculpture Park.

8. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Although there are not very many off-leash dog parks, the ones they do have are excellent. For example, Granville Dog Park has wooded trails, a creek and hills. In addition, Milwaukee has very low-cost veterinary care.

This sunny and very walkable city offers affordable vet care and several off-leash dog parks. You can even take your dog hiking in a redwood forest!
