ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1794, Eli Terry took out the very first patent on a clock. It was about time!
In 1869, the Suez Canal opened. It got it's name from everyone asking "Su... ez... dis da canal?"
On this date in 1940, the Green Bay Packers became the first NFL team to travel by plane.
- And why not? The owner had gotten free tickets for everyone. See, even back then, they relied on the pass.
- There was very little room for carry on luggage once everyone took their cheese-head off.
- They flew to New York to play the Jets, but since jets hadn't been invented yet, they just flew back to Green Bay.
- Yes, most of the players couldn't wait for the plane to... touch down!
On this date in 1959, synthetic diamonds were created for the very first time.
- It was the perfect solution for the guy who wasn't sure if he wanted to marry her, but didn't want to rent the ring.
- This lead to the song, "Synthetic Diamonds are a Girls Best Imitation Friend."
- Of course, with them came the creation of artificial karats.
- They ended being a girl's best fake friend.
This was that Sunday back in 1968, that infamous day when NBC cut away from the final, crucial minutes of a Jets/Raiders game to show the movie "Heidi." What was the final outcome? Oh, I think Heidi ended up living with her grandpa.
Anyone remember Daisy Fuentes? She turns 49 today. She used to be quite the deal -- MTV, "America's Funniest Home Videos." They're both still a part of her life, but now as a viewer.
RuPaul celebrates his/her 55th birthday today. I'll let you tell her. He'll blow out the candles on his cake using a cross-draft.
Lorne Michaels, the creator of "Saturday Night Live," turns 71 today. His party is expected to run around 90 minutes, but only 8 of the minutes will be actually funny.
Danny Devito also celebrates his 71st birthday today. And that's about the only big thing about him. He'll spend a quiet night at home, sitting in a booster seat, blowing out the candles on his cake.
Singer Gordon Lightfoot ("Sundown") turns 77 today, despite his best efforts.
Homemade Bread Day -- A day for the family to remember and enjoy the making, baking, and eating of homemade bread. You know, there is nothing like the smell and taste of fresh, hot homemade bread coming out of the oven.
